LIAF 2022 - Best of the Next 1

Part one of a double bill screening of new work by up-and-coming animators from around the world

This is the first of two ‘Best of the Next’ screenings on Friday 2nd December. The second programme of new student work screens afterwards at 9pm. Bundle tickets for both screenings are available for £14 (£10 concessions) via the link below.


The London International Animation Festival (LIAF 22) - the UK’s largest and longest-running animation festival - is back with 10 days of amazing screenings, talks and visits from local and international animators from November 25 to December 4. We are especially excited to return to our favourite venue the Horse Hospital with 3 nights and 6 extra special screenings and talks from several of the world’s best animators.

Selected from 60 graduate showreels, this is a look at the best student work from all around the world – the first step on the animation ladder for these talented filmmakers, and the first time their wild and wonderful imaginations have been unleashed. Stop-motion, drawn animation, collage, cut-out, CGI, clay, ink and almost every other technique these animators can dream up are all on display here. 28 wondrous films in 2 screenings from the future stars of our animation universe.

Dude [Switzerland 2021 Dir: Konstantin Rosshoff, Tokay Yotimo, Marco Jörger 5’15]

A wild stop motion trip. Two dudes are lost in the woods. One searches for a way out in vain, the other enjoys the fresh air whilst slowly losing his mind.

Aeons Ark [UK 2022 Dir: Sophie Maria Vickers 6’30]

A futuristic flood epic which depicts the destruction of a future world by a momentous flood.

Small Hours [Ireland 2022 Dir: Marta Sniezek, Christian Spurling 4’55]

Two people's trains of thought transition from one memory to another. As we dive deeper into the memories we transcend into the character's subconscious and lose track of reality.

Goodbye Jerome! [France 2021 Dir: Adam Sillard, Gabrielle Selnet, Chloé Farr 7’40]

Having just arrived in paradise, Jerome sets out to find his wife Maryline. During his search, he sinks into a surreal and colourful world in which no one seems to be able to help him.

Caught up in a violent snowstorm, the rabbits seek refuge in their king's Castle.

Gruf and Me [Israel 2021 Dir: Dovi Keich 7’45]

When Gruf, a graffiti character, falls in love with the street artist who created him, he tries to find her in the shabby streets of Tel Aviv but discovers that inter-dimensional love is not easy.

Birdsong [USA 2022 Dir: Michelle Cheng 3’00]

A field biologist reminisces about his encounter with a bird species on the brink of extinction.

A famous Chilean "Riot Dog" gets to know María, a young protester. Together they are at the front of big protests. But one day they both go a step too far.

Patient's Mind [China 2022 Dir: ​​Zhiheng Wang 6’05]

A patient goes to the doctor for surgery, but soon, his inner self and superego clash over the future of sickness, merging identities with the performing surgeon.

A short film about loneliness. Publo hides a deep secret in his little home, and must learn to face the music once it is discovered.

Bob the plumber is hired to fix a broken pipe and lands to his surprise in a gay fetish club.
