ABOUT THE FILMS:

PUB: THE MOVIE (dir. Andrew Leavold, 2022)

Is this the most rock’n’roll documentary ever made in Australia? A wild and crazy ride through Melbourne’s art and punk underground, from the director of The Search For Weng Weng!

Leavold’s latest film experience takes viewers back in time to an almost extinct era of Australian pub culture where live music epicentres like Melbourne’s St Kilda were wildly energetic and heaving with the outrageously fun antics of legendary characters like PUB’s main subject, Fred Negro (real name!).

Known by locals as the unofficial mayor of St Kilda, Fred Negro’s role in the local music and arts scene will go down as the stuff of legend. As well as being much-loved for his contribution to live music in bad-taste bands such as I Spit On Your Gravy and The Brady Bunch Lawnmower Massacre, Fred also produced the weekly comic strip “Pub” which for decades featured the shenanigans of St Kilda’s music and social scene in Fred’s unique, outlandish and often outlawed illustrations.

A beautiful rock’n’roll love letter to a bygone era and staying true to one’s art, and featuring interviews with rock legends including Tim Rogers (You Am I), Greg Macainsh (Skyhooks), Ross Knight (Cosmic Psychos) and Paul Stewart (Painters And Dockers), PUB: THE MOVIE was a smash hit at the 2022 Melbourne International Film Festival where it broke the Astor Theatre’s bar record!

“…a raucous, energetic, hilarious, heartbreaking delight from hard-thumping beginning to beautifully bittersweet ending” (Filmink)

RIBSPREADER (dir. Dick Dale, 2022)

Hilarious, blood-soaked no-budget splatterpunk masterpiece on the perils of smoking from Adelaide-based filmaker Dick Dale (Trasharama film fest, etc)

“Smokin’, it'll kill you in the end. One way or another...”

Decades after his career as a tobacco advertising icon, Bryan Burns' life is in ruins. After his mother dies of lung cancer, he is tormented by a talking cigarette from an anti-smoking billboard who blames him for his mother's death. Bryan's already fragile mental state can't handle the abuse and he snaps, transforming himself into The Ribspreader - a killer stalking the city streets, extinguishing smokers one-by-one and cutting out their lungs to make his macabre smoking jacket. But in a city of murderers, freaks and perverts, The Ribspreader isn't the only killer out there and it's not long before a turf war for victims erupts into a horrific showdown of explosive violence and bloody carnage!

With cameos from Troma Films’ Lloyd Kaufman, Laurence Harvey (Human Centipede 2), Aussie music legends Chad Morgan and Spencer P. Jones, Rat Scabies (The Damned) and Fred Negro and Andrew Leavold (Pub: The Movie), this movie is like the greatest film Troma never produced!

“…an affable drunken boofhead of a movie, staggering onto the screen and delighting audiences primed for 90 minutes of garish, socially irresponsible, utterly irredeemable entertainment” (Filmink)
