Stephen Lloyd Varble was a notorious American genderqueer performance artist and playwright associated with the vibrant Lower Manhattan performance art scene of the 1970s. Described as ’a prophet of possibility in a corrupted world’ , Varble’s work mocks wealth and class and glorifies the discarded and worthless.

Published by Institute 193 in 2018, ‘Stephen Varble: An Antidote to Nature's Ruin on this Heavenly Globe’, is the first critical text ever published on this underusung artist, originally released alongside the exhibition of the same name curated by David Getsy. In the later 70s Varble started incorporating drawing and video into his work and many of his drawings and xerographic prints are beautifully illustrated in this book.
