Doors 7:30PM, Program Starts 8:00PM
Cinema happens in the mind when we stitch what we see with what we hear. We're going to amp up that fun by having a live jazz trio, led by Rachael Cohen, improvise soundtracks to a program of contemporary short films. The program will combine a selection of Reed O'Beirne's films along with works by artist filmmakers such as Martha Colburn, Kamila Kuc and more.
Rachael Cohen is a London-based alto saxophonist and composer with skills as a composer and improviser. The Guardian notes: “Cohen takes a softly devious approach reminiscent of Lee Konitz – but, as with the canny Cool School veteran, the quietness is deceptive and the subtlety is in the weighting of phrases and the hipness with which she plays off the rhythm section.” Originally hailing from the Shetland Islands, Rachael tours and continues to work extensively across the UK with her own projects and has come to be a mainstay at London clubs such as Ronnie Scott’s and the Vortex as well as having her residencies at other clubs throughout London.
Reed O’Beirne is an artist and filmmaker who has recently transplanted from Seattle WA (USA) to the UK. He is a graduate of the creative writing program at Vanderbilt University, and founder of Emerald Reels, an organization dedicated to supporting artistic filmmaking. His films have screened widely at film festivals and art events including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, The Oaxaca Film Festival and the AVIFF Cannes Festival. Some of the prizes won by his films include the Best Experimental Short Film Award at the 2015 Oaxaca FilmFest and the Best Short Film Award at the 2013 United States Super 8 Film + Digital Video Festival.
