Sullow are an improvising trio featuring Jacken Elswyth, Daniel S. Evans, and Joshua Barfoot of Shovel Dance Collective. Inflected and informed by the traditional music they mutate within the larger group, they negotiate an improvisation that has been variably described as ‘farmyard’ and ‘rodeo’. By turns scrabbling and sweeping, passing motifs rise and fall in quick attacks, short decays and dense bursts of momentary composition.
Resonant Bodies is a duo comprising Rob Bentall (nyckelharpa) and Zebedee Budworth (hammered dulcimer), who met playing in processional folk-horror ensemble Slug Milk sometime in 2017. They also now also help to coordinate the minimalist free-folk project Emergence Collective. As a duo they seek routes into a free-flowing, improvised folk music via the raw, tonal harmonies of their ancient instruments.
Last autumn Resonant Bodies, Jacken, and Josh played a mini-tour together and spent a day recording an album soon to be released as part of the Unfiter series. For this micro-tour a full-strength Sullow and Resonant Bodies will perform together, to explore the tensions and affinities between their contrasting approaches to free-folk.
