An evening dedicated to Joseph Pujol, "fartist" extraordinaire

"The sails of the Moulin Rouge - What a marvellous fan for my number"

At the end of the 19th century, a certain Joseph Pujol from Marseille took the Moulin Rouge and Paris by storm, breaking all attendance records including that of Sarah Bernhardt. Pujol's act included using his resourceful rectum to blow out candles, imitate farmyard animals, smoke cigarettes and re-create the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Programme:

I. Ian McNaughton's "Le Pétomane" from 1979. Leonard Rossiter gives an inspired performance as Pujol. (33 min). Peter Sellers and David Niven both expressed interest in the part, but were advised against it by their agents!

II. Le Pétomane: Fin de siècle fartiste. Rare documentary from 1998 with, among others, Roger Shattuck. (56 min)

III. An episode of The Cake ("Tårtan") from 1973. Swedish children's tv series about three former sailors who own a patisserie in Stockholm. In this episode, which was a "tribute" to Ingmar Bergman, Northern angst turns into something rather more Rabelaisian... (English subtitles. 10 min)
