Casuistry: The Art of Killing a Cat
Zev Asher
2004, Canada, 91 minutes

“The woman said she didn’t want to see art galleries becoming slaughterhouses, because it wasn’t necessary. I really believe that slaughterhouses and galleries should merge, because maybe what we’re looking for in the galleries is something to be seen in the slaughterhouse.”

Casuistry is the science of justifying something which may not be justifiable and Jesse Power, imprisoned in 2001 along with two young accomplices for brutally torturing and killing a pet cat in the name of art, is rather worried that it’s something he might be doing. As a member of a society built on the mass slaughter of animals, he suspects it’s something most of us are doing too. Premiered amid a storm of controversy at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and making its UK debut at The Horse Hospital, this careful, delicate film examines the killing and the notoriety that followed, avoiding explicit footage but building an unsettling impact by giving the participants the chance to tell their side of the story. The director, Zev Asher, interviews detectives involved in the case, animal rights activists and the cat killers themselves. An important film.

The director will be present at the screening, conducting a Q&A and hopefully a demonstration afterwards.
