an installation where each artwork is itself a relation entaken, encumbered, incincessant* within the plurality of the space.
Through a sequence of experimental processes over a year long period, Li Cassidy-Peet has produced a site specific installation at The Horse Hospital - a Grade Two listed, two-floor stable in Bloomsbury, central London built in 1797 – which now operates with contemporary value housing an art gallery, a film club and large costume collection.
The installation pertains to the building, its history and the activities taking place during her period as artist in residence; installation as psychogeographical portrait. Cassidy-Peet utilises experiences of being within the space, referencing costume, music, film, art, literature; allowing the viewer to make their own imaginative links through drawing, wire drawing, relief, collage and video. In researching cultural materials on location, both informations ( interior architecture & research material ) are morphed into a experience manifest in glo-paint, charcoal, wire, cellophane, textural video and paper. Musically biased by the Horse Hospital, neon salmon Rothko leap upstream in the air; a minimal virus suspended within the competitive hygiene of art.
Cassidy-Peet’s interest resides in the effect experienced while entering a space; its breadth, presence and the resonance it evokes; thought processes triggered; possible futures posited; the qualities of one space sensing another. Taking rubbings from the environment, examining details of fabric and architecture, durationally relating to events within the space, the installation divines the nature of the artist and this arts institution with reference to the public domain, the relationship of the individual to present and past architectural experience.
Moments are transformed into delicate hangings exhibited throughout; works correspond to colours within the space; colours evoked by feelings during events; colours of memory coloured by the present; the colour of architecture in relation to the human. Hands on, this installation highlights the fissiparity of waste – the emotional, present landscape of self and memory reproduced to singular metaphors blossoming from sequence and exclusion; shining bright from and within art; from and within society, and war.
