KAWABATA MAKOTO
Kawabata Makoto is the founder and inspiration of Japan’s foremost ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE collective. Collaborating previously with REALITYfilm’s production of the sell out live cinema anime presentation “LEGEND OF THE OVERFIEND” at London’s South Bank Centre Queen Elizabeth Hall, Kawabata returns alone for a solo interpretation and live performance to a digital projection of Seijun Suzuki’s “ZIGEUNERWEISEN”.
Un-subtitled and without translation KAWABATA MOKOTO’S musical interpretation is the sole medium of communication in two evenings of unique and intimate performance - otherwise English language free - dedicated to celebrating the cinema of Seijun Suzuki, the tonality of the country’s language and the revolutionary development of Makoto’s “extreme electric trip music” formed from “ the constant ringing that I hear in my ears and the heavenly orchestras I have heard playing in my dreams…”
“A stunning film about decadence and nihilism in the twenties, with the symbols that impelled the elite in the country to fascist delirium. The dramatic relationship between two couples and a geisha affected by religious dilemmas on life and death. This is the film that best justifies the title 'wizard of image' bestowed on Seijun Suzuki.”
Cast: Yoshio Harada, Naoko Otani, Toshiya Fujita, Michiyo Okusu, Kisako Makishi. 145 mins 1980
DEEP SEIJUN
Voted Best Japanese Film of the '80s by Japanese critics.
